Erik Zabel of Milram won the sprint into Offenburg, taking his 13th career victory at the Deutschland Tour, by beating José Joaquín Rojas of Caisse d'Epargne. |
Tour de Suisse: Another win for Zabel
Milram's Erik Zabel is enjoying a late career revival, due perhaps to the weight that has been taken off his shoulders. Since his May 24th confession for having used EPO back in 1996, Erik Zabel has returned to his top sprinting form. He won stages two and three in the Bayern Rundfahrt and today galloped home ahead of Daniel Bennati (Lampre-Fondital), Fabian Cancellara and Stuart O'Grady (both CSC) to win the second stage of the Tour de Suisse. CarbonSports takes over Lightweight
The
German carbon-fiber specialists at CarbonSports will take over production
and distribution of ‘Lightweight’ bicycle wheels, the world’s
most sought-after high performance bicycle product in recent years. CarbonSports,
located in Friedrichshafen in the south of Germany, has years of experience
designing and building cycling components, making them the ideal home for
the Lightweight product line.
The wheels invented by Heinz Obermayer and Rudolf Dierl from Munich
offer an exceptional combination of low weight, high stiffness and extraordinary
aerodynamics. Both Obermayer and Dierl will continue to have strong ties with
CarbonSports to ensure continuity.
“Lightweight wheels are our baby, and we have long been looking for a suitable
partner who can continue our successful work”, says Heinz Obermayer. “CarbonSports
is the ideal match, as they have heaps of experience with carbon fiber. I’m
glad we were able to find someone who can match our quality standards.”
CarbonSports will use the same proprietary technology developed by Dierl
and Obermayer in producing the wheels. As with their other products, the main
focus will be on quality. “The wheels push the limits of bicycle technology;
they are the pinnacle of evolution. Our first goal is to reduce delivery times,
which are 12 months currently. We are working on some new developments, but
the top priority right now is on the current wheelset. First, we want to make
sure that riders can get these wheels within an acceptable amount of time.
As specialists in the field of carbon fiber products we look forward to this
challenge – Lightweight wheels will continue to be the best wheels in
the world”, says Erhard Wissler, head of CarbonSports.
CarbonSports will shortly add online-ordering to their website, giving
riders easier access to the products. In the words of Stefan Behrens, head
of distribution and sales: “We know that many amateur racers and enthusiast
riders want to ride the material the pros ride. We want to see to it that
everybody can ride the same wheels as his idol.”
The cooperation of Lightweight and CarbonSports, the two successful
names in carbon fiber bicycle components paves the way for the attainment
of this goal.

World’s
Best Series: CarbonSports riders ride circles around Leder
family*
Harald Funk and CarbonSports team rider
Thomas Braun set the fastest bike splits during the semi-distance triathlon
in Hiltpoltstein (Bavaria) held as part of the 2003 Worlds Best Series. Current
German national champ Heike Funk completed the triumph for CarbonSports bikes
with her first place finish in the womens field.
Getting
ready for the start, Lothar Leder had bragged about how he would “leave
the CarbonSports bikes in the dust”. Think again! Harald Funk
and Thomas Braun once again proved the aerodynamic superiority of the
CarbonSports frames by easily passing by the world class athlete, who
is currently riding for Cube bikes. After only 70 km (44 miles) Funk
had eliminated Leders two-and-a-half minute lead, eventually finishing
with the fastest bike split.
Second
fastest athlete on the bike was CarbonSports team rider Thomas Braun,
who also came in second overall. Lothar Leder came back with the second
fastest running leg of the day to claim the overall victory. Leder also
rides a carbon fiber monocoque frame. We suspect his Cube paint job
to hide a Swiss-made Walser frame.
Braunís
CarbonSports teammate Alexander Taubert, on the other hand, had one
of his less successful days. Only two days after a German 1st division
race he had not recovered enough to stay with the top riders over the
entire distance. Starting out great, he had to let the others pull away
mid-way through the cycling leg. However, the incredible comfort offered
by the CarbonSports frame allowed him to recover and set the fastest
running time. Taubertís fourth place overall wouldnít be bad for most
riders, but was not quite satisfactory for someone with a Hawaii fifth-place
finish in his palmares.

2. Thomas Braun (GER)

3. Harald Funk (GER)

4. Alexander Taubert (GER)
swim: 0:24:21 - bike: 2:26:04 - run: 1:02:00 - 3:54:52
Lothar
Lederís wife Nicole made the same experience as her husband as she lost 14
minutes to Heike Funk, the current national champion, on the cycling leg alone.
Heike Funk went on to win the womenís race.
1. Heike Funk (GER)
swim: 0:25:42 - bike: 2:37:09 - run: 1:13:44 - 4:18:43
2. Imke Schierisch (GER)
swim: 0:29:35 - bike: 2:38:24 - run: 1:13:08 - 4:23:10
3. Nicole Leder (GER)
swim: 0:25:43 - bike: 2:51:14 - run: 1:05:22 - 4:24:34
We congratulate all athletes and recommend the Leder family to think
about ordering CarbonSports frames soon.

frame shipped under another name.
